If you're looking to install new countertops or build a new home, you want to know which surface is best. Choosing which solid surface materials to use can be difficult. Each material has different properties that make them suitable for a variety of purposes. Learn more below:

Quartz
Quartz, sometimes referred to as engineered stone, is a man-made solid surface material that is becoming extremely popular due to it's durability and wide range of colors Quartz is non-porous and resists staining much better than its natural stone counterparts.

Because of its man-made nature there are a plethora of styles, colors, and finishes to suit all tastes and needs.

Marble
Marble is a classic and elegant natural stone with a smooth fluidity in patterns and veining that has been used for centuries. It can be a great addition to any home if you are willing to take care of it. Marble is available in a number of colors and often has a polished or honed finish.
It is more fragile than other natural stones both structurally and its susceptibility to etching/staining. View our Marble Care Guide for more information about marble countertops in your home.

Granite
Granite is an extremely popular choice amongst homeowners who are looking for a classic look and longevity that will leave your countertops looking the same for a lifetime. Available in a number of finishes and a plethora of colors, Granite will continue to be a mainstay in the stone industry.

Quartzite
Quartzite distinguishes itself from other natural stones with its hardness. It is generally much harder and more durable than its granite and marble counterparts, as well as more resistant to scratches. Quartzite is a porous material that will require sealing 1-2 times per year.

Check out our Quartzite Care Guide for more info.

Soapstone
Soapstone is a soft, smooth natural stone primarily composed of talc, giving it a velvety feel. Though prone to scratches, these can be buffed out or left to form a natural patina. Its non-porous nature eliminates the need for sealing, and its acid resistance makes it ideal for kitchens. Regular mineral oil application enhances its color and beauty.

Semi-precious stones
Semi-precious stones offer a striking, luxurious aesthetic with unique natural beauty. Stones like amethyst, agate, jasper, and lapis lazuli are bonded with resin for durability and sealed for protection. While softer than granite or quartzite, they resist stains when maintained but require gentle care. Their rarity and intricate patterns make them ideal for high-end statement pieces.
